I like to be exact about things.
May. 22nd, 2010 05:34 amI just started a new drama and in the spirit of posting more, I am posting my first impression and not waiting until I finish it. XD Okay, so, I've only seen the first episode but I'm so very pleased by the set-up. So far all signs seem to be pointing to a woman who goes against the terribly-irritating-patriarchal-grain. Oh, show, you know what I like. :)

Status: Finished episode one.

This is Ogiwara Saki.

She is a badass.

She is also a paralegal who is studying to take the bar... for the ninth time.

No matter how much people give her a hard time or try to tell her she should find "a woman's happiness" (gag) , she is determined to stay on her own path. She is awesome.
Her hobbies include:

Making detailed lists of things she needs to know. (Or sign number one that I will really like this girl! ♥)

Grabbing her boyfriend (painfully) by the arm.

Delicious cheeses. (Sign number two! Ah, my kind of lady. ♥)

Labeling everything in her refrigerator.

In fact, being a stickler for all details. XD

Keeping a journal of all her days. All entries start with "Studied until 1:30 am" because, as mentioned, she is determined.

And maintaining an excellent shooting record in wastebasketball.
Additional cast of characters:

Saki comes across this lady, Hasumi Riko, who insists on being her friend. She seems kind of superficially terrible in some ways but I think it will be a thin veneer over being totally awesome. She already has the crazy eyes, in a good way. :)

Oh hello, The Japanese Voice as a rogueish playboy! Here to siddle up into people's personal space, Aida-san? Awesome! :D

Too bad for you Saki is a tough egg to crack. She blows him off with only "I don't have the free time to involve myself with someone like you." ♥

(ALSO this happens (not with Saki) and makes me wonder if I'm really watching a jdrama. XD)

Her aforementioned boyfriend person, Sakamoto Masato! He is kind of a weakling but also kind of sweet. After the first episode, I have my fingers crossed that he doesn't turn into a complete douche because I really like the idea of starting the main character in a established relationship and actually having that person not be terrible! But plotwise that seems like an unlikely path??
Notable points from the first episode:

She finds being crammed into girliness rather trying! (Note: that is an attempted smile. ♥)

There is cuddling! It is initiated and shown from the perspective of our heroine! Yessss.

Ladies, breaking down a door in an emergency!

A mother who, when faced with the prospect of her daughter not getting married and giving her grandchildren, goes "Eh, I was not expecting these things of you! It's okay!" WHAT MIRROR HAVE I STUMBLED THROUGH? (Answer: A good one. :) )

(Heh, as soon as she turns her back on him, she is soooo not impressed. XD)

I am highly excited for these two people to get into an antagonistic but outwardly friendly (moving to inwardly friendly) relationship. They both seem socially adept and apt to sometimes use that power for evil. And by 'evil' I mean backhanded compliments :)

This girl's eyeeeeeees! While she appears to be cold and unfeeling to a lot of people and she definitely is closed off, Saki has so much going on just under the surface and you can see it all in her eyes. I love that she is defying a lot of the expectations put on women but she isn't stripped of emotion at all.
In conclusion, a strong start! I'm excited for more Magerarenai Onna and can only hope that the we move forwards and not backwards in terms of people being great. :)

I started watching it because I saw your post and I'm so glad I did. This first episode made me so happy and I have high hopes for the rest (I don't see how it can go wrong when there's dancing)! THANK YOU. :D

Date: 2010-05-22 06:39 pm (UTC)Man, I came SO CLOSE to starting this drama a couple days ago! I was feeling stale in my drama-watching and started watching Down with Love again (I'd only stopped because I figured I'd wait as long I could to give subs a chance--I mean, they are hour and a half long episodes, I do not envy the subbers their job) and that went over really well. (I think you'd like Down with Love!) And then I was like "but I also want to start something new!" And I hovered over THIS drama for a LONG TIME, knowing from Wolfie that I'll probably love it. And then I hovered over a kdrama, and then I was like, hmmm, I am feeling rebellious! And I started another twdrama and I am OBSESSED with Devil Beside You and am on episode eight (of twenty) after like two days. Yesterday I kept thinking "oh, one more" and watched like five episodes, thinking each was the last. IT IS THE MOST DELICIOUS CHEESE. I AM IN LOVE.
Anyway, yes. Someday I will watch this and love it and we came so close to an UMAI of starting something at the same time without planning it. <3
