Okay, so flist, you may or may not know that I'm currently in love with asian dramas. It's like American TV, but much crackier! And since they have a set amount of episodes, they never have a chance to fall off-track and become terrible! Seriously, it's so great to just a 12-16 episode season to watch of pure fun.

If you're new to dramas, I'd have to recommend you actually start with Hana Yori Dango as that's the show that hooked me. It's a recent classic for reason! However, there have already been great pimp posts about that show... so here's one about my current show that needs more love/fandom: Full House. It's about an aspiring writer, Han Ji-eun who, through a series of plot twists, winds up sharing a house with Young Jae, a famous actor.

You should watch Full House if you like:

1. Terrible Amazing Amazingly Terrible Fashion. While Young Jae can't quite compete with the ~outfits~ put together by Chuck Bass or Domyouji, he does like to expose at least 30% of his chest at all times. And, as far as they go, it's a very nice chest. :D

(That lime green crocheted v-neck is still seared on my retinas.
Btw, all ~looks~ come from just the first two eps. XD)

2. Han Ji-eun is both adorable and not afraid to kick some ass/be generally immoral. Like, conning some celebrity (...okay, it's Young Jae) she just met out of some money because she really does need it! Or headbutting him in the face. Also, her profession is an "internet novelist" which is just how you put "fanfic author" on your resume. She's one of us!

(Yes, Han Ji-eun will headbutt you in the face and chase you down in three inch heels.)

3. Couples who aren't too cool to like playing on a swingset. Seriously, the main couple enjoys psedo-dates would make many 13-year-olds say "Please, that's so lame" but are really adorable activities.

(Examples: learning to ride a bike, going ice-skating and, of course, playgrounds.)

4. There's a scene in which both our male and female lead try to make the other nervous by stripping off some clothing. It's as awesome and hilarious as it sounds!

(Two words: strip chicken.)

5. You need the sweet, sweet crack that only asian dramas can provide. Trust me, you do.

(Warning: Do not watch for the plot.)

ALSO: You might recognize the actor who plays Young Jae from his infamous rivalry with our very own Stephen Colbert. RAAAAAIIIIN! ...This brought me so much joy.

If you're interested in downloading this, or any other, Asian drama, you should go join [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. It's an awesome community that's provided me with many hours of entertainment. <3

Coming up next, icon posts. And why you should go watch Nodame Cantabile, because I'm going to be flailing about that one too. It has more plotty elements in addition to the adorablity and crack. Pfft, if that matters to you or something! ;)

OMGGGGGG!!!! YOU ROCK FOR THIS PICSPAM!!

Seriously, I've been looking for a picture of that green v-neck since *forever*. I haven't seen Full House in awhile but I STILL remember that v-neck. It was so horrible/awesome/horrible/awesome that is is imprinted on my memory.

Yay pimp post! I really feel that everyone should watch (at least) Hana Yori Dango and Full House. They are the asian drama classics!

(Also, you watched/are watching Nodame?! I love that one too! Have you seen the specials yet? I cried! I think I might have liked the two specials better than I actually liked the series because they were so amazing.)

RAIN!!! "Hey Rain! It's raining!" He produces such deep, meaningful music. I love him so much. Young Jae/Ji-eun is so cute and OTP and I love them so much. Also that is such an awesome call on the fact that she is basically just a glorified fanfic writer. Hee!

And since they have a set amount of episodes, they never have a chance to fall off-track and become terrible!

I'm starting to think that this might be one of my favorite things about Asian dramas. Imagine, a whole series that is good all the way through because it's not forced to carry on for years and years past what it's premise can handle. So instead of one or two good seasons and then many seasons of suck in which to become bitter about the show, you get one or two AWESOME seasons and then it ends! No bitterness involved! Imagine if Veronica Mars had followed that mold?!

(OMG I am so dorkily exicted for the icons that will come of your Full House obsession Have I mentioned how happy I am you're into Full House? Because it makes me very happy. Only one other person on my flist watched it and that makes me sad! Do you mind if I pimp out this pimp post on my journal?)

NO, YOU KNOW WHO ROCKS? YOU, BB. I would have never known the wonder of Full House without your influence!

Seriously, I've been looking for a picture of that green v-neck since *forever*.
Ahaha, I live to serve! I've been capping these eps anyway for iconage. Hmm, maybe I should upload them somewhere in case someone else wants to make use of them! It's totes understandable that the green v-neck sticks out in your memory. It's a ~treasure~ of fug.

I am in the process of watching Nodame! I only started it a few weeks ago but I have a date with a piece of brie and the final ep this weekend! I don't know if I'll get watching the specials then too but I've heard such good things about them. Seriously, Nodame is my next obsession after Full House. :D

RAIN!!! "Hey Rain! It's raining!" He produces such deep, meaningful music. I love him so much.
Considering Young Jae is such a teenybopper idol, I totally just think of Rain as interchangable with his character. But giving me way more joy with his art of cheesy pop and fab dancing. RAAAIN.

No bitterness involved! Imagine if Veronica Mars had followed that mold?!
Exactly! That's always been one of the worst things about American TV. I haaate it when shows become pale mockeries of themselves. I can't even say how many shows I've quit and never watched the ending. Hello season three VM! Let's just loosely lay out the whole series and go out strong.

OMG, I'm just so excited that there's some anticipation for what I'm making! Except for my flailing at you through comments, I feel like I'm watching this show in a vacuum. It's strange after being in healthy fandoms for a while. And please, pimp away! We're going to reel people in, slowly but surely. XD

Full House is glorious crack. It's hovering near the top of the list of my All Time Favourite Kdramas (topped only by Coffee Prince and Boys Over Flowers).

This was a terrific post!

Terrible Amazing Amazingly Terrible Fashion.

Hee! Have you ever seen [livejournal.com profile] princess_dexter's picspam of Young Jae's more. . . *interesting* fashion choices? It's a thing of horrific beauty.

Aw, thank you! It's hard to express the awesomeness of this drama to the uninitiated but I tried.

*adds Coffee Prince to list* Full House is my favorite kdrama... but it's my also my only kdrama at the moment. I'd only seen jdramas previously. I'm gathering recs and working on it though! :D

...I cannot even tell you how excited I am to dig into that picspam tomorrow! I literally just giggled aloud with glee. There is no other topic of our times that so urgently CRIED OUT to be picspammed! Thank you for sharing this with me. If it's not tagged on [livejournal.com profile] dorama_chat, I probably have no idea it exists. And clearly, my life is poorer for it!

ALSO, your icon rocks my socks. As you could probably guess, since I chose a very similar cap in the spam! A+!

Full House is actually much much loved; it's one of the original dramas that sparked off the surge of drama-craziness over the past 20 years or so. I personally love it to death and it was (I think?) my first ever drama and also what sold me on Asian dramas ;) Welcome to the wormhole that is Asian dramas - you'll never get back out of it!

Nodame Cantabile I like much less actually, but HYD is amazing.

oh yes, and I COULD NOT SECOND MORE the rec for Coffee Prince - it along with Full House is in my top 5 favorite dramas of all time, the others being(all highly recommended) Taiwanese drama Mars, kdrama Goong, and Jdrama Hanazakari no Kimi Tachi e(it has Oguri Shun from Hana Yori Dango!)

Yeah, I've seen Full House appearing on several "Best Kdramas EVER!" lists so clearly, it has a lot of fans. I'm just spoiled by being in fandoms for (especially currently airing) American shows that produce tons of content. ...I want fanfiction/icons is basically what I'm saying. XD

Full House is my... fourth drama, so I'm still very much in the honeymoon period! And thanks for the welcome (I already sense I'm beyond escape) and the recs! Hana Kimi was actually the last thing I finished (I followed Oguri Shun there!), but all the other are going on my list. This pimp post has certainly succeeded in helping me pick what to watch next! ;)

OMG I HATE LOVE HAVE A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS SHOW.

it's so incredibly STUPID in places, but Young-Jae and Ji-Eun are so..so..*flails*

[livejournal.com profile] anenko and [livejournal.com profile] princess_dexter are going to mock me for even mentioning that sometimes i love it alot. *mourns*

and yes, you NEED to see [livejournal.com profile] princess_dexter's picspam of bad fashion, because it is SO AWESOME.

..it will also burn out your retinas, but what can you do?

YES, this drama is definitely not with it's flaws and sometimes it makes me want to smack my head against a wall. BUT, for me, the TOTAL CRACK and OTPNESS of Ji-eun and Young-Jae really make up for the level of frustration. <3

(It may also help that this is only the... fourth drama I've watched and my first kdrama.)

BUT YOU HAVE ICONS, DOES NOT THAT IMPLY LURVE? XD

I so excited for that picspam that I'm saving it for when I have ample time to flail later today! The ridiculous fashion is worth the potentially scarring damage to my eyes!

BUT YOU HAVE ICONS, DOES NOT THAT IMPLY LURVE?

NO. IT IMPLIES THAT I AM COMPLETELY INSANE.

I wanted to hit things, especially Bitchface, whatever the heck her name was, the clothing chick, SO MUCH throughout this drama. many times i wanted to hit MYSELF for watching it.

did you see the picspam of bad fashion yet? it is not to be missed!

NO. IT IMPLIES THAT I AM COMPLETELY INSANE.

OH OKAY. LOVE WAS A PRETTY CLOSE GUESS.

many times i wanted to hit MYSELF for watching it.
Hee, you're such a masochist. Though yes, I wanted to hit Hye-won ("Bitchface" suits her better) many MANY times. I spent most of her scenes saying to myself "WHY are you SO TERRIBLE?" and "Your bra is NOT A FASHION ACCESSORY".

Speaking of, I did look at the bad fashion picspam and it was just as wonderful as promised! Oh man, it looks even worse when collected together in one place. Plus the categories were AMAAZING. SCARF-TIES.

Plus, it really struck a chord because [livejournal.com profile] princess_dexter mentioned, "if you thought this was filmed in the 90s, I can't blame you...". As I wrote in reply to that, when I had only seen the first two eps of Full House, [livejournal.com profile] mojotastic enlightened me to the rivalry with Colbert. And I was very confused when Colbert said "24-year-old pop sensation Rain" because I THOUGHT FULL HOUSE WAS FILMED IN 1994. I had to go google it. True story.

I think I need to give this drama another try. I remember enjoying it initially but the whole side plot of that girl from the clothing store pissed me off & I ended up skimming the rest of the series. Plus, I adore Smiling Pasta which is just Full House with a mature Rain character & a lot of stupid crack.

Date: 2009-02-19 04:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] topazera.livejournal.com
Ha, that side plot pisses me off too. It's basically just that girl continually yanking the main guy around because she wants to feel loved, like the most important person in someone's life, even if it's completely selfish. (If it makes you feel better she eventually acknowledges that!) For me, how fun and adorable I find the main couple outweighs the problems I have with the series. :D

I've heard that Smiling Pasta is good, but I've never heard it described like that! That definitely sounds like something I'd like. <3

Date: 2009-02-19 04:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladysaotome.livejournal.com
It also annoyed me how the main guy tended to act like a 6 year old - his way of teasing was usually hurtful & I wanted to slap him half the time. But I really do need to give it another try.

Smiling Pasta really was based off of Full House. Kinda-sorta loosely, you know? The main girl ends up in a fake engagement rather than a marriage. The main guy was dumped for his brother but once the dumper thinks he's engaged she starts running after him again (but not nearly in such a selfish way - she's hurt by his brother & wonders if she made a mistake, etc.) Main guy teases main girl constantly but in a much kinder, gentler way that makes it obvious he's starting to fall for her to everyone but the two of them.

Even Main girl's evil friends are loosely in the drama - only as her brother & his wife - but that about ends the similarity.

Best thing of all, & what was missing from Full House so far I as saw, was tons of amourous tension between the two - the tons of almost kisses that make you squee, etc. Very good drama!

From: [identity profile] topazera.livejournal.com

Ah, gotcha! It's sometimes hard to tell if people mean "there's generally similar themes" or "it's based on the same story". Thanks for clearing that up and for the quick summary! :D

Best thing of all, & what was missing from Full House so far I as saw, was tons of amourous tension between the two...
Ooh, sounds good! None of the dramas I've watched so far have had too much of a physical relationship, which I don't really mind, but man, I could go for some almost-kissing right about now! I'm not sure I want to watch Full House and Smiling Pasta back-to-back but soon! As I said in another reply, this pimp post has definitely helped me pick what to watch next! ;)

Date: 2009-02-19 07:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ladysaotome.livejournal.com
Almost-kissing is so frustrating but perfect all at the same time. I'd rather have a half dozen almost kisses culminating with one big smoocher at the end than real kissing constantly throughout. It builds the tension & makes the ending that much more satisfying. It's definitely my favorite Taiwanese drama so far & one of my top silly romance faves altogether. Hope you enjoy it!

Hehehe, then my evil plan is working! :D I figured this post would be good for some Full House nostalgia, considering tons of people have already seen it.

Yes! Song Hye Kyo is gorgeous and completely lovable. I spend most of the time I'm watching thinking "Young Jae is such a failure! I love him! ...But he better get it together eventually, Ji-eun deserves awesomeness." I love her, definitely girlcrush material. <3

GOD, I agree so hard. and the writers don't let fans or real life relationships influence the storylines--which almost always leads to disasters.

BUT. TOPIC. Full House is incredibly fun! Rain was incredibly charismatic and SHK was (is) THE adorable. I was surprised she can do comedy so well and those two have beautiful chemistry. K-dramas tend to get redundant and tedious (as in if you've seen one drama, you've probably seen them all), but Full House felt fresh and delightful and I feel like popping my discs in right now. YES, that's always turns out to be AWFUL. Shows slowly meandering downhill because they have no set ending is pretty much my number one problem with American TV. I wish we had some equivalent to the Asian drama system. Or British TV, I guess.

K-dramas tend to get redundant and tedious (as in if you've seen one drama, you've probably seen them all)
Ha, Full House was only my... fourth drama and first kdrama. I'm a little nervous other won't be able to live up. I can only watch so many identical love quadrangles/people almost getting hit by a car/hugs in the rain!

THAT is the beauty of Asian Dramas. They have the plot written out right from the start. And the characters never do anything OOC for a reason.

K-dramas tend to get redundant and tedious (as in if you've seen one drama, you've probably seen them all),
I don't necessarily agree with this! I don't watch any of the sappy K-Dramas, I watch all the ones that are supposed to pander to the ~young adults~ and they are all pure, sweet, unadulterated crack, or just downright hilarious and romantic and sweet. Have you watched Princess Hours or My Girl?

Thank you for the comment! Full House would certainly be in my Top 3... but I've only seen, like, six at this point so it isn't that tough of a competition. ;) I really fell hard for this drama though. Both leads are SO DAMN CUTE and every episode they seemed to find new ways to be more adorably and dorkily in love. It just made me happy to watch! :)

I was going to reply to one of your comments about how you've only watched one K-Drama, so I need to come in and recommend you because I LOVE K-dramas. Not the sappy cancer ones though. The hilarious plane-taking, always has a resort-episode one with Gossip Girl like characters!

For K-Dramas, Watch:

Coffee Prince (I saw all the recs for this, it is truly a thing of beauty)

Princess Hours (I swear, I wanted Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick to do an Americanized version of this. It has horrible fashion too, but it takes place in a pretty, pretty palace.)

Boys Before Flowers (I know people are going to hate me for this, but it's better than the Japanese one. Btw, the guys dress better than Nate and Chuck on GG, I SWEAR, and they up the ante on the supporting cast, such that sometimes you go off rooting for another couple when you're bored with the main one.)

My Girl (Classic. this is an example of good plot writing. The characters and storyline never stray for one second)

Sassy Girl Choon Hyang (WATCH FOR THE UNIFORM. IT's PINK.)

And of course, another classic, My Name is Kim San Soon. (all these are comedies by the way, I never watch the sad ones with cancer.)

I noticed your Hana Kimi icon. If you haven't watched the Taiwanese version. DO NOT. Do NOT for one second watch any Taiwanese dramas, except for It Started With a Kiss and even that one's pushing it because it only gets awesome in the last 3 episodes. ALSO I LOVE NAKATSU.

Oh man, thanks for all the recs! I'm definitely always on the lookout for what I'm going to watch next.

The hilarious plane-taking, always has a resort-episode one with Gossip Girl like characters!
Yes, that's it exactly! Why would I spend my free time watching a sobfest when there's so much cracky hilarity to be found? :D

Coffee Prince: Oh man, I just started watching this a week or two ago! I'm so in love with it. I actually just posted a pimp post along this lines of this one for it yesterday. XD

Princess Hours: And that's the show I was debating on downloading before I picked Coffee Prince Invoking Leighton and Ed is a good way to rec anything. LMAO, I love all the crossover between asian drama people and GG people. <3

BoF: I feel like I'm never going to be able to give it a fair shot, since Hana Yori Dango was my first drama. Also I keep on hearing negative things about the writing consistency... but then again, I do watch GG. I have heard that the Soujiroh equivalent has a Chuck Bassian creepiness too him which YES, DO THAT. Plus, fashion. IDK, it's a toss-up.

My Girl, Sassy Girl Choon Hyang, and My Name is Kim San Soon are all shows I've heard the names out. Good to know they're cancer-free! I've seen little clips of Sassy Girl Choon Hyang in a vid on YouTube and it looked adorable from those 10 secs!

Do NOT for one second watch any Taiwanese dramas
LOLOLOL! That's a STRIDENT warning! Are they all too sappy and/or angsty? None of them have really caught my eye, though I've recced MARS so that one is on my list.

Thanks again for taking the time to rec me stuff! I definitely find dramas appealing for the same reason you do, so this is great. *goes to restructure my list*

They're not sappy or angsty--- they're just plain boring and draggy and they try too hard! And the ACTING. GOD-AWFUL. The girls try and act cute, and the guys act cool all the time and it's just really gross. I tried so hard to give the Taiwanese Hana Kimi a chance because, bless its heart, I loved the Japanese one so much.

Coffee Prince and Princess Hours have the same lead girl. For me, it was such a shocker to see her in Coffee Prince where she plays such a boyish character because, like the title says, she was this kickass princess-by-marriage in Princess Hours. And she really grew as an actress.

I would say that both the Domyouji and Soujiroh equals in Boys Before Flowers emulate Chuck Bass, in 'tude. Their style is comparable, but they make less fashion faux pas.

Ugh, thanks for the clarification! So far, acting is the only reason I haven't continued watching a drama. I mean, I know I'm in it for the crack, but it has to be convincing crack! I do love the Japanese Hana Kimi, but honestly I think that would just make me a harsher judge of other adaptations.

For me, it was such a shocker to see her in Coffee Prince where she plays such a boyish character because, like the title says, she was this kickass princess-by-marriage in Princess Hours.
Ooh, that makes me even more excited for Princess Hours. I've developed quite a thing for Yoon Eun Hye and it's tough for me to imagine her as the 'princess' type. I think I may have found my next kdrama. ;)

Ah, that's interesting! I think the impact would be greater if you saw her go from Princess Hours to Coffee Prince but either way she's a great actress. She's so likable and adorable and in Princess Hours she brought a great deal of depth to her character (because initially I passed her off as a this act-cute schoolgirl)

Omg, this show. Pure crack. So much cuteness and prettiness and oh God, the fashion. The chemistry between Rain (RAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN) and Song Hye Gyo is amazing. It's one of my all-time favorite dramas.

LOLOLOL, hearing about Young-jae's ~fashion~ sense was what first convinced me to watch the show. I will watch a lot of things for the fashion but it really did not disappoint. And, of course, I wound up really loving the whole package. Rain and Song Hye Gyo pretty much owned me with cuteness and OTPness. This drama just made me happy. :D

Plus, it introduced me to RAAAAAIN and my life hasn't been quite the same since. *g*

I love your default icon, btw. Team Guillion FTW!

Oh man, that lime green thing. Every time I watch that episode I break out in laughter... It's just so... so.... lulzy

There really isn't another way to describe it. Well, maybe 'horrifying'. I don't know how the wardrobe person stuck Rain in that shirt without bursting into laughter and saying "Honey no, take that off".

Thanks for commenting! I never get sick of talking Full House. Especially, Young-jae's wardrobe. ;)

Oh man, I'm so happy to hear that! I really meant it when I said asian dramas should have a place in everyone's lives! I just find them so fun and light-hearted, which is often what I want in entertainment.

I hope you like Full House, if you try it! It gets a little too repetitive but overall I just think it's just adorable. If it's not your cup of tea, I'd definitely also rec Hana Yori Dango, which was my first drama. Or Coffee Prince but that might be setting the bar a little high.

...Can you tell dramas have stolen many little pieces of my heart? Anyway, have fun! I'm glad you liked the pimp post! And thanks for the 'gorgeous', I puzzled over cap selcetion and coloring for a while. :D
