I DARE YOU TO DO BETTER

OH MY GOD! THE STAR TREK REBOOT HAS BROKEN MY BRAIN!
I have not come out of a movie with this feeling in my heart in a long time! ACTUALLY that feeling started in the very first scene! After the cold open, my dad and I turned to each other and just said "I love it." "It's great." Seriously, I adored everything about this film. I don't think I can talk coherently about it yet, my head is still in a fog of squee.
BUT SOME CAPSLOCKING LISTING:
1) HOLY SHIT, the cold open! I had involuntary, undeniable tears come to my eyes by the end of it. To have such a powerful scene introducing the parents one of your main characters? EXCELLENT. Plus, this whole movie just has GORGEOUS EFFECTS and just seeing the TOS ships but all new and stunning rendered was probably cause enough for tears.
2) YOUNG KIRK, ILU SO SO MUCH! His introduction of driving the classic car off the cliff and SABOTAGE and "James Tiberus Kirk." It was just so much awesome and perfectly encapsulated the Kirk swagger. I feel like this movie updated Kirk perfectly. As charismatic as Young Shatner is, it's hard to get past the dated womanising-and-brawling. CHRIS PINE TOTALLY NAILED THIS ROLE.
3) We switch to Vulcan! I GASPED. Such a gorgeous establishing shot! I felt I was seeing Rivendell for th first time! YOUNG SPOCK. THE KIDS COME UP WITH INSULTS EACH DAY TRYING TO PROVOKE HIM. Ah, I love EMOTIONALLY CONFLICTED Spock!
4)BUT CONFLICTED SPOCK GETS SO MUCH BETTER WHEN THEY SWITCH TO ZACHARY QUINTO. He totally rocked my world. I was actually most concerned that it would be tough to recapture Spock. I mean Kirk needs charisma but there are tons of charismatic dudes! YET SPOCK is all about saying a lot by doing so little. IT WAS ALL PERFECT. The FEELINGS underneath the control! I LOVE HIM SO. Like EVERYONE IN WORLD, Spock is my favorite from TOS and that RICH TRADITION has been upheld. <3
5) SPEAKING OF, SPOCK/UHURA OTP FOREVER. !!!!! AMAAAZING. He didn't want to show favoristism! But she tells him how it's going to be! THERE WERE BOTH MAKEOUTS AND COMFORT HUGS. It always felt FALSE to me that 99% of the ladies went for Kirk so I'm SO HAPPY the reboot had corrected this by giving him an AWESOME and TOUGH and SMART lady! Before I saw the movie, I was all "Spock/Uhura happens apparently? Huh, I don't know how I feel about that." NOW I KNOW HOW I FEEL AND IT IS FANTASTIC. <3 <3 <3
6) I love the cast. I mean, I already loved the casting but everyone did so well in their roles, better than I could have foreseen. Uhura was so badass and ANTON YELCHIN does Boy Genius!Chehov in such a believable and likable way and BONES was so instantly BONES and there was a SPACE-AGE SWORD ("Fencing.") and Scotty was so appropriately SCIENTIFIC and MAD GENIUS. Every time a new character would appear, it was just so thrilling. Like a whole new world was opening up.
7)AGAIN SPEAKING OF, I love that they VERY EXPLICITLY made this whole thing an AU! It gives them so much leeway with people attached to TOS and opens up all kinds of interesting, fresh character exploration. The only thing I'm bummed about is VULCAN. I just had it in the back of my mind that they were going to fix the timeline and save Vulcan. While I think it's more powerful that they didn't and the "endangered species" is a juicy development for Spock, it's so hard to wrap my mind around them actually destroying Vulcan!
7) Oh man, this whole movie was just such a gift. Every so often I would think "And there's still more movie left?! It's already given me so much!" and I'd watch the next scene with even greater fervor. I just 100% enjoyed myself. As soon as the credits rolled, I turned to my dad and said "THEY BETTER BE GREENLIGHTING THE SEQUEL AS WE SPEAK. FILMING MUST START NEXT WEEKEND." When (it must be when) they do the sequel, I'm looking forward to some actual exploration! And I desperately need more Kirk/Spock BFFery! By the time we got to the good stuff, the movie was ending! (OH I guess I never got to that by YES KIRK AND SPOCK. THEY HAD THE CHEMISTRY.) I'm also pleased as punch that this movie is uniting Trekker/Trekkie and completely new viewers alike. GUYS, NOW WE CAN ALL TALK ABOUT TREK. AND IT'S COOL AGAIN WHAT.
...I'm going to need to see this movie again very soon. Also, icons.

Date: 2009-05-11 06:11 am (UTC)It feels like such lucky timing to be able to see something I wound up loving on my bday! I hope everyone has such good luck some years. <3

Date: 2009-05-11 01:22 pm (UTC)I haven't seen any star trek but I've heard this is good. Do you recommend the movie to ST virgins or is there something else I would want to see first?
That and hi.

Date: 2009-05-12 12:13 am (UTC)I would definitely recommend this movie to ST virgins! It very much reboots the franchise and changes things up anyway, so you don't need to know anything else to get the movie. It's more of a good, fun summer blockbuster than anything. Plus, a bunch of my lj friends who don't know anything at all about Trek liked it so I know it's not just me! ;)
Hi! How are you? Gosh, it's been a while. I kept seeing your lj entries a few days late and thinking it was too late to comment for some reason. It seems silly now. But I've certainly thought of you! <3

Date: 2009-05-12 04:23 pm (UTC)Haha about sharing mother's day. Our compromise was to help mom with her garden in the afternoon and do birthday stuff in the evening. Went fairly well until my dad and brother got into an adolescent boy fight that involved airborne tennis balls and A CROWBAR. All in good fun, they said. (?)
How are you?

Date: 2009-05-12 12:28 am (UTC)Was Zachary Quinto not the best thing that has ever happened? I also questioned 99% of the ladies always going for Kirk, because 99% of me always went for Spock ;)
UM YES. I feel like this movie vindicated GENERATIONS of women who've watched Trek. There is nothing more attractive than being SMART and DRYLY SARDONIC and RAISING AN EYEBROW WELL and now everyone knows that.
I kept going WHERE IS SCOTTY, and then he was so perfect when they found him (so much love for Simon Pegg).
Yes, so good! I knew with Simon Pegg, there was no way to fail. And Scotty and Chehov are actually British (which is almost Scottish) and Russian (-ish) now! It's amaaaazing.
I am also super sad about Vulcan though. My favorite episode of the series took place there.
I love Vulcan! It's my favorite homeworld, probably because Vulcans get so much development. Ooh, which episode is your favorite? "Amok Time"?

Date: 2009-05-12 02:34 am (UTC)So much YES. Middle-schooler me was obsessed with him, and cried when he died. Also, Gene Roddenberry had some backstory writings where Spock and Uhura were a thing and it was going to be vaguely hinted at in the series until SHATNER'S GIANT EGO got in the way and demanded that he get the first interracial kiss, ha.

Also, John Cho is Korean, which is SORT OF IN THE VICINITY OF JAPAN. Hahaha. I wonder if they ever get up to TNG characters...will Picard actually be French? I feel like nobody should ever break the Frechman-with-a-strangely-British-accent rule.
Ooh, which episode is your favorite? "Amok Time"?
Def, because I was super happy when Spock was all smiley at the end. Closely followed by "City on the Edge of Forever", "Mirror, Mirror", and "Journey to Babel".

Date: 2009-05-11 10:36 pm (UTC)Also it's nice to know I wasn't the only one sort of tearing up in the cold open. IT WAS SO SAD. And little Kirk with the car!
SPOCKY ILU BB! Seriously, Zachary Quinto: why so odd looking and yet so sexy? I thought he was fantastic. And I'm a little obsessed with Spock/Uhura OTP4LYFE at the moment.

Yes! It's good to hear it's not just me either! I felt like maybe I'm a little overly emotional but they just really got me with the PRETTY and the MUSIC and the NOBLE SACRIFICE.

Right? He's makes control and restraint so sexy! (Note: Edward Cullen, don't even try it.) Zachary Quinto as Spock totally won my heart in this movie, even though I loved all the characters. I really need more of them all being a crew ASAP. And like, on my TV every week. XD
And I'm a little obsessed with Spock/Uhura OTP4LYFE at the moment.
I'M A LITTLE CONCERNED THEY'VE EATEN MY BRAIN. I could not fall asleep last night, mulling them over in particular. And now I've discovered

Date: 2009-05-13 03:46 am (UTC)God, Spock/Uhura won my heart so damn quickly and thoroughly. I think they're great. Also, I feel a particular thrill that Uhura, small as her role was, made a big impact and it's not just all this Kirk/Spock fandom love anymore. ;)

Date: 2009-05-13 05:10 pm (UTC)And I'm THRILLED that the fandom will have things that I'M interested in. (Because I could hardly care less about sexual Kirk/Spock.)
